Jim Legxacy, the upcoming Lewisham artist is back with candy reign (!), once again painting pictures with his stunning blend of R&B, Hip Hop, and Afrobeats. The track, produced and written by him, is endlessly catchy, and another standout in Jim’s small catalogue.

candy reign (!) features a plucky acoustic guitar, turntable scratches, bouncy drums, and dreamy Roy Woods-esque vocals. It’s an incredibly memorable song, carried by his vocal performance, refrains, and sampling.

The ‘blue borough’ singer has been making waves since the breakthrough EP Citadel, and his even more successful, endlessly replayable Eye Tell (!), one of 2022’s most irresistible, earworm singles so far. He sounds more Toronto than South East London at times, making him a unique voice in the UK capital’s constantly evolving scene.

He’s constantly tackling vulnerable, honest subject matter in his music, whilst making heartbreak sound as pretty and creative as possible by playing around with different saccharine sounds, layered vocal effects, infectious inflections, and samples. A song like hit it light it twist it sounds equally Midwest emo as it does Afrobeats, and even features a sample of Skepta’s unhinged diss track Nasty, paying homage to his London roots. His 2019 single Willyoustabmeintheheart showcases more aggressive emceeing alongside rattling bass, contrasted by beat switches and gentle, melancholy vocals and guitar. He’s the perfect soundtrack to gloomy come-down afternoons or late-night walks in London.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise from his crooning style that he’s a fan of JPEGMAFIA and Baby Keem, whilst also being surrounded by peers like Zino Vinci and JSANC. His silky delivery and genre-bending talents make him one to keep a close eye on over the next year, and a standout amongst his contemporaries, disobeying sonic compliance with his shining, pitched vocals, and stripped-back minimal sound palette. He still only has 11.5k followers on Instagram, but if he keeps up his hot streak, he’s bound to become UK Hip Hop’s next superstar.
