Seminal grime and dubstep night FWD>> takes over Printworks next week. Here’s everything you need to know about the event.
Words: Liam Cattermole (@liam_cattermole)
Few club nights have had an impact quite like FWD>>. Started at Velvet Rooms in 2000, the event has been a cornerstone of British club culture for well over two decades and its greatness is still being felt today. So much so, that promotors The Hydra have curated a lineup in its honour for one of Printworks’ closing parties.
Pitting itself against the high glamour, high fashion ethos of garage and two step, FWD>>’s existence is epitomised by clubland’s dark and bassy sounds. A flag-bearer for UK dubstep, the event moved to nightlife institution Plastic People in 2005, before aligning with Rinse FM and remaining relevant throughout the 2010s. If you were part of dubstep’s cognoscenti at the time, then you’d have certainly found yourself in the dingy spaces it occupied. Barely being born when it started, we’ll be there to experience what feels like a piece of British clubbing history; one of the country's most iconic events, partnering with one of London's exemplary music spaces... for one night, and one night only.
The party pioneers have been announced for Printworks’ final season. A clubbing mecca, hosting two-stepping revellers since 2017, the venue is closing after Southwark Council gave the green light to a Canada Water regeneration project. However, all is not lost for the club's fans, as its organisers hope to re-open the space in the future.
A heavyweight selection of DJs and emcees, FWD>>’s Printworks lineup celebrates the melting pot of UK bass movements that’s defined its legacy. Highlights include Hyperdub founder Kode9 playing with man-of-the-moment Flowdan, Croydubbers Skream and SGT Pokes, and veteran turntablists Plastician and Maximum. The Inkwells room is also brimming with talent, as LCY, Fiyahdred and XNBTNI take to the decks around a host of names.
Tickets for FWD>> have already sold out, but with 40 nights announced for Printworks’ farewell, you can pick one up for another event here.
