MY LIFE IN A MIXTAPE: ARCHY MOOR

Breaking through the noise with his debut EP ‘Bonnie Hill’, Archy Moor makes us a mixtape of his life, featuring music from Jurdan Bryant, Ice Spice, Joyce Wrice and more.

Words Liam Cattermole - @liam_cattermole

When Archy Moor sat down to make the new single ‘I’ve Been’, he did in the most impulsive of circumstances. With little time before a flight to South Korea, he got to work – penning a verse for Earl Saga’s beautifully sporadic beat. The track’s finishing touches were made in Asia, followed by self-shot visuals that capture the moment's spontaneity.

Last Week, Moor followed up the single with his debut EP, Bonnie Hill: a project that contemplatively explores the artist’s journey so far. Over six dexterously delivered tracks, the Dublin native shows why he’s next up from the Metropolitan City’s music scene, avidly telling his story over Saga’s revolving lo-fi beats.

With a fruitful 2023 to come, and the promise of more music beyond Bonnie Hill, we asked the multifaceted rapper-songwriter to make us a mixtape representative of his story so far. From a secret love of Ice Spice to his favorite Earl Saga production and smoking to Asher Roth, dive into his selection below.

Hey Archy! Let’s start off easy. You were recently on a trip to Asia, where you coincidentally recorded your new single “I’ve Been”. But which track from another artist did you listen to the most on the holiday?

I was high-key raving to Joyce Wrice a lot during that trip. The cut she's got with Kaytranada goes hard!

You were born in Nigeria, a country with an incredibly rich musical heritage. Is there a particular song that you associate with home?

'Yahooze' by Olu Maintain is a classic. That’s the song normally playing when you come out of the airport terminal after the flight over.

Taking it right back, what’s the first song that you remember personally being obsessed with?

I don’t know why but 'I Predict A Riot' by Kaiser Chiefs. That shit was looped and looped during my kid years. I listened to it every morning before school to get psyched for the rough day ahead.

I’m sure your lifelong friends know you very well, but what’s one track you love that even your closest mates would be surprised about?

Ice Spice's discography goes in. She’s hard. We should make music together I think.

Do you have a favourite song to smoke to? If so, what is it?

Asher Roth - 'I Love College'. The tone is set, and it goes without saying, it's the anthem!

On your brilliant new EP ‘Bonnie Hill’, you work closely with producer and close collaborator Earl Saga. What’s your favourite production of his that fans can listen to right now?

It’s got to be an old one, check out Pour Me - 'Jurdayn Bryant'. It’s sick.

For this one, let’s say Archy Moor’s at a house party. He’s had a few drinks, and the vibes are good, but which track is getting him on the dancefloor?

Kiss Kiss by Chris Brown. I’d probably bust my head trying to pull off some Step Up-type moves but so be it, the vibes are good.

To wrap up, what song from your discography would you like everyone to listen to?

Everything!
