HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK: DOUVELLE - MALIA
There’s an undeniable synergy between Cypriot rave resorts and grime. For many years, the scene’s heavyweights would fly to islands like Ayia Napa and Malia for their holidays; hosting club events and pool parties to people who had come to vibe with Black British music in idyllic weather conditions. Genres like UKG, funky and U.K. bass equally thrived in the sweltering mediterranean sun, and every summer, the trip became a pilgrimage for anyone invested in our country’s various underground sounds.
Tim Westwood’s YouTube channel hosts a hive of vintage freestyles from this era; particularly in 2008 - when Ghetts was named Ghetto and Skepta was donning Ed Hardy. One freestyle in particular, involving those named and Tinchy Stryder, is the source of Douvelle’s latest grime house edit ‘Malia’. This could be our favourite flip of his yet. Combining a contagious groove, thanks to a silky Todd Edwards sample, with the slurry, alcohol influenced flows of three grime legends, the track is as smooth as the Hennessy Skeppie and co were probably drinking that day.
If you aren’t familiar with Douvelle and his edits, they are a great way to indulge in the history of grime; especially some of the scene’s best regarded freestyles. From Novelist to Frisco and JME to Wiley, the producer has repeatedly enlivened the genre’s past; paying homage to the greats and injecting their bars with Chicago house grooves. Listen to ‘Malia’ below.
