Parris – HÖR Berlin Dalston

Setting up shop in Dalston, HÖR have been hosting sets live from London across April with some of Britain’s best DJs. Plastician, Oneman and Sicaria are a few names that spring to mind, but Parris’ set of techno earworms was definitely a highlight. Learning his trade by going to FWD>> and obsessing over grime, the London-based selector now embodies a range of sounds, squeezing tribal drums, acidic melodies and much more into this 55 minutes of greatness.

Jossy Mitsu – Rinse FM 26 April 2023

Jossy Mitsu’s most recent Rinse FM show championed new releases from Bok Bok, Bluetoof and many others. The Birmingham-born and raised vibemaker is known for her twisted concoction of leftfield club music and this set was no different, channelling reverberated ama piano basslines and wobbly UKG courtesy of Innovate and Logan.

Scratchclart & Toya Delazy – Keep Hush Live X Relentless

Mutating British and South African sounds with a unique finesse, Scratchclart’s selections are still as cutting-edge as when he first started. Kicking off this set by playing AntsLive’s viral hit ‘Number One Candidate’, the turntablist quickly switches to chest-shaking ama piano grooves, suiting the ferocious hype woman abilities of afrowave singer Toya Delazy. As the set progresses, and his Avirex jacket looks even icier, Scratcha moves onto UK bass and grime movements, before ending in South Africa.

The Sound Of: Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth co-honchos Facta and K-Lone celebrated their DJ Mag feature with a mix comprised of 100% Wisdom Teeth releases. Across almost 2 hours it's easy to see why the label is amongst the most celebrated in the UK.

Laksa, Live at Nowadays

Laksa really should've been in tracks of the month too, but REPEAT HQ, in their ivory tower, only gave me three picks. Nowadays is the beating heart of New York's growing underground club scene and is developing a global reputation. This recording from Laksa's visit in February 2023 has only enhanced this reputation, with two hours of uncompromising 160 mayhem.

I. Jordan HÖR London Takeover - Apr 25 / 2023

Our pic of the live sets from HÖR Berlin's London takeover comes from I. Jordan. Driving techno, swirling synths and even a cheeky 4x4 bassline banger is all packed into the 55 minutes. Honourable mentions go out to Pangaea and Plastician, whose contributions to the 360 mirrored Dalston iteration of the iconic green room narrowly missed out.

RDC 063- Special Request

At this point it feels like there might not be any DJ from the UK more deserving of an MBE than Paul Woolford. Under his government name Woolford has conquered big room house and techno, while still concertedly holding an ear to the more underground and left-field side of dance music through his prolific Special Request alias. The Leeds legend uses his entry for Rainbow Disco Club’s mix series to showcase the staggering wide breadth of styles that he has incorporated into the Special Request sound- jacking House and Techno, Experimental electronica (throbbing gristle into Dillinja!!??) Electro and unsurprisingly a healthy dose of Jungle. While the latter more Jungle-focused half is still excellent, it feels a particular treat to hear Woolford flex his house and techno muscles through the lens of Special Request, where the club tracks he spins feel spacier and weirder than anything you’d hear him play at in Paul Woolford set.

THC | Boiler Room Berlin: Explorers

Tania Humeres Correa, AKA THC, has been causing quite a stir on the club circuit as of late, both through her solo sets as well as with her brother DHC under their S-Candalo moniker. Correa’s Boiler Room shows exactly why her name is on so many clubbers lips at the moment, showcasing her unique penchant for fast, pumping Hard House and Trance. In a lot of ways, Corea’s sets feel like an antithesis to the dark Techno sound that has taken over her native Berlin over the past 5 years or so- while they may share a similar tempo, the world Corea creates through her sets feels so joyful and technicolour that it feels hard to go back to the bleak sonics that the German capital seems so taken with currently.

RA Sessions: The Fear Ratio

Mark Broom and James Ruskin’s work as The Fear Ratio can only be classified as techno in the loosest sense of the term- which coincidentally is the best way the term can be used. In their RA session, Broom and Ruskin channel a myriad of influences into a staggering 18-minute live set - there are echoes of Autonomic Drum and Bass, Autechre and Surgeon that run through this recording, which Broom and Ruskin use to showcase how Techno really can and should be anything it wants to be. While it would probably leave a Teletech crowd bitterly disappointed (although maybe that's a good thing?), this set showcases the experimental spirit of techno in its purest form.

Breakage and SP:MC- HÖR London takeover

It’s hard to think of a DJ/MC combination more well-suited than Breakage and SP:MC. While the two possess their own very distinct and impressive styles, it is something of a miracle just how well they mesh together- Breakage’s weighty, simple-yet-smart Jungle and Drum and Bass acts as the perfect compliment to SP’s laid-back yet authoritative MCing. The pair’s HÖR set does a fantastic job at showcasing this dynamic, with SP:MC’s voice floating over yet still cutting through straight rollage from Breakage.
